Refereeclassschedule_small

Grade 8 referees (most of us) who became referees in 2009 or earlier must attend an intermediate clinic in order to be eligible to register for 2011. You can't get your hours of instruction by attending local meetings any longer.

There are 7 clinics scheduled for eastern PA this year.  You must pre-register! Walk-ins aren't allowed!

Clinic Schedule:

  • Saturday 2/6: Twin Valley H.S.
  • Sunday 2/7: Dickinson College
  • Saturday 2/20: Quakertown H.S.
  • Sunday 2/21: Haverford H.S.
  • Sunday 5/23: Twin Valley H.S.
  • Saturday 10/23: Keystone Job Center
  • Sunday 10/24: Geisinger Medical Center

Cost is $35.00 per person which includes lunch.  A refresher test is given at lunchtime. Questions on the test are focused on the USSF Directives, Advice to the Referee and the Weekly Review.

Check the Study Aids section below to find links to helpful study materials for the refresher test.

Please visit the EPSARC website (link below) to obtain a registration form and for more information. REGISTRATION FOR EACH CLINIC IS DUE SEVERAL WEEK PRIOR TO THE CLINIC.

Yearly Recertification

Badge_small

All referees must reregister and re-certify each year in order to continiue to referee games.  The basic requirements are:

  • 6 hours training
  • Passing a refresher test.

Training can only be accomplished either by attending an intermediate clinic.  An intermediate clinic is a one day session which will include all of your training and the referesher test.

If you were first licensed in 2010 or are a college student:

  • If you took the entry referee class in calendar 2010, you don't have to take the recert test. Your test during the class counts as a recert test.
  • If you're a full time college student, you don't have to take a recertification test. It, and the hours of instruction, are waived for college students.

Study Aids to Prepare for the Test

Successfully passing the refresher test depends on more than just your knowledge of soccer. The test is based upon the official rules of U.S. Soccer - not the rules of your local youth league.

Below are resources you will want to review.

Laws of the Game from U.S. Soccer

The "golden" resource - you will want the current edition for U.S. Soccer. The FIFA version is somewhat different and not the resource on which the test is based.

U.S. Soccer's Week In Review

Weekly blog reviewing key development's each week on the officiating scene.

U.S. Soccer Position Papers

U.S. Soccer's officially stated interpretations of the Laws of the Game. Information from these papers will appear on the test.

Ask A Referee

Great site from U.S. Soccer discussing the laws of the game and practical refereeing questions.

AYSO Referee Library

An interesting AYSO site with many information resources.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia can also be an excellent resource explaining laws of the game, such as this article on penalty kicks.
